Format text with Markdown
Scribbles are written in Markdown, but you never have to look at it. Type the Markdown marks and the formatting appears as you write. The marks fade into the background, and most disappear until you put the cursor on them to edit. Prefer the keyboard? Every format has a shortcut too.
| Format | Type | Shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Heading 1, 2 or 3 | #, ## or ### and a space | CtrlAlt1 to CtrlAlt3 |
| Bold | **text** | CtrlB |
| Italic | *text* | CtrlI |
| Strikethrough | ~~text~~ | CtrlShiftX |
| Inline code | A backtick on each side | Ctrl` |
| Link | [text](https://…) | CtrlShiftK |
| Bulleted list | - and a space | CtrlShift8 |
| Numbered list | 1. and a space | CtrlShift7 |
| To-do | - [ ] and a space | CtrlShift9 |
| Quote | > and a space | CtrlShift. |
| Divider | --- on its own line | CtrlAlt- |
| Code block | Three backticks on their own line | CtrlAltK |
| Back to plain text | CtrlAlt0 |
Lists and to-dos
- Press Enter to continue a list, and Enter again on an empty item to end it.
- Press Tab to indent an item and ShiftTab to outdent it.
- Click a to-do’s box to tick it off, or press CtrlShiftEnter with the cursor on the line.
Callouts
A callout makes a note stand out in a colored panel. Type /callout, or start a quote with > [!NOTE]. Click the callout’s icon to change its kind: Note, Tip, Important, Warning or Caution. They use the same marks as GitHub, so they read the same in other Markdown tools.
Code
A code block shows its language at the top: click it to choose from the list (Python, TypeScript, SQL and more) for syntax highlighting. Copy puts the code on your clipboard. Choose Mermaid diagram to draw a diagram; see Add drawings and diagrams.
Sections
Hover a heading to fold its section out of the way (Collapse section), or press CtrlAltEnter. The link button beside it (Copy link to heading) copies an address that opens the scribble at that heading.
Pasting
Paste Markdown and it formats like anything you type. Text copied from a web page or document arrives as plain text. Images paste straight into the page; see Add images.
