Insert blocks with slash commands
Type / at the start of a line, or after a space, to open the block menu. Keep typing to filter it, then press Enter to insert what’s highlighted.
- Type /. An empty line reminds you with “Press / for blocks”.
- Type a few letters, such as
tabfor a table ortodofor a to-do list. Markdown marks work as search words too, likeh2or[]. - Choose with ↑ and ↓, then press Enter or Tab. You can also click a block.
Press Esc to close the menu and keep the slash as text. A slash typed inside a word (“and/or”), in code or in a web address never opens the menu.

Before you start typing, the menu groups blocks under Pages, Basic blocks, Media and Inline. Blocks with a Markdown shortcut show it on the right, so you can learn to type it directly next time.
