Change a keyboard shortcut

Every app and writing command can have its keys changed in Settings › Keyboard Shortcuts. Click the keys next to a command, press the new ones and save.

  1. Press Ctrl, to open Settings and choose the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. (From the Ctrl/ list, click Customize keyboard shortcuts.)
  2. Find the command: type in Search commands or shortcuts…, or click Record keys to search next to it and press keys to find the command they run.
  3. Click the command’s current keys, or Add shortcut if it has none.
  4. Press the new combination. It needs Ctrl or Alt (on a Mac, Command, Control or Option), unless it’s a function key such as F2.
  5. Optionally, choose When it should run, such as While writing or Outside text fields.
  6. Click Save shortcut, or press Enter. Esc cancels.

If the keys already belong to another command, the dialog says so under Already assigned. Click Reassign shortcut to move them to this command, or pick other keys. The same keys can run different commands when their When conditions don’t overlap.

Remove or reset shortcuts

  • Open a command’s ⋯ (Shortcut options) menu to Add shortcut, remove one of its keys, or Reset to default.
  • Reset all puts every shortcut back to its default, including ones you removed.
  • Filter the list with All, Customized, Unassigned or Conflicts. A dot marks shortcuts you’ve changed, and a warning sign marks conflicts.

Typing keys, menu navigation and the keys inside built-in controls (listed under Built-in controls) can’t be changed. The daily note shortcut also has its own Change shortcut button in the Daily Notes section below the list; see Use daily notes.
